CHASSIRON LIGHTHOUSE

The Chassiron lighthouse is located at the northern tip of the island of Oléron, also called "point of the end of the world".
Its strategic position allows sailors to locate the entrance to the Pertuis d'Antioche, the scene of many shipwrecks....

Visiting the lighthouse

The site of the Chassiron lighthouse was entirely rehabilitated in 2007. This historical monument is open to visitors.
After climbing the 224 steps, visitors discover a unique 360° panorama. The highest point of the island, it is possible to observe the northern half of the island of Oléron, the ocean, the Pertuis d'Antioche, the Rochelaise coast as well as the islands of Aix and Ré. Without forgetting the mythical Fort Boyard!!

 

The museum
The lighthouse rotunda, former apartments of the guards, now houses the Museum whose theme is "People of the coast between land and sea".

For about 20 minutes, the visitor will discover the life of the Oléronnais, land sailors and sea farmers, through their daily life and their know-how. The visit is illustrated by traditional objects and models.

Accessible for both children and adults, the museum is equipped with a lift for people with reduced mobility.

 

Prices and conditions of access

 

The number of people who can visit simultaneously is limited:
- Lighthouse: 50 people
- Museum: 20 people

During busy periods, a waiting time is to be expected to access the lighthouse.

During the summer period, the peak attendance periods are as follows: 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

The visit to the lighthouse is subject to weather conditions. As a security measure, the ascent of the lighthouse is closed to the public in stormy weather and when the wind speed exceeds 70 km/h.

 Our animal friends are not allowed in the lighthouse and the garden.
